Non-perishable survival foods that you should always keep on hand

You can't survive for long if you don't have food to keep you going. Your body needs fuel. It doesn't matter if you are stranded in the desert between California and Nevada or need food for your 72-hour kit. You need to have quality fuel and nutrition for survival.

Here are foods that will never spoil and may only change in terms of flavor over time:

  • Hardtack crackers/biscuits
  • Dried cranberries
  • Rice (white, jasmine, basmati tend to do best since brown rice doesn't last)
  • Honey
  • Dried beans
  • Dried split peas
  • Maple syrup

The foods you just read in the list above do well as long as you keep them dry. There's a good chance you don't want to eat flavorless food. Here are seasonings and condiments that are non-perishable:

  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Spices
  • Pure flavor extracts such as vanilla
  • Vinegar
  • Dried herbs
  • Worcestershire sauce

Which food items do you already have on hand? Remember that you don't have to buy everything all at once. Take time and purchase non-perishable foods over time. You will be able to get everything you need without breaking the bank.
